I have the honor to be the first best selling book to grace the digital pages of #flourishdigitalmagazine May 2020 published by #chloetaylorbrown.

On any given day in the United States there are more than 2 million children that have a parent in prison.   I wrote See You in the Sky: A Memoir of Prison, Possibility and Peace to tell the other side of incarceration, how having a parent in prison impacts the families. My father went to prison for the first time when I was ten. My sister and I were told that he went away to a training school. Then one day I accidentally discovered the truth. He was in jail. Thus, began decades of me fearing abandonment, hiding family secrets, and avoiding emotional shame.

When I was a young adult my father was sentenced to life without parole for drug trafficking. I spent thirty-five years visiting my father in maximum security federal prisons.  Through this time, however, I began to realize that my father wasn’t the only one in prison.

See You in the Sky takes the reader on a journey of how I evolved from my own mental and emotional confinement of fear-based stories and judgments to having a better relationship with my father and myself.  See You in the Sky offers hope for not just children of the incarcerated and their loved ones behind bars, but for anyone desiring to heal from dysfunctional family experiences.

My dad asked me one day after he had been in prison for 30 years, “Would you change anything?”   I paused for a long time, looked him in the eyes and said, “No.” In that moment we both understood the same truth. Through and because of the struggle and sacrifice, we shared an endearing bond that transcended the physicality of prison. The inner peace and freedom I found was made possible by my awakened knowing the true meaning of unconditional love. I have written this book to share that heartening possibility with others.
